In Katong, life moves at the gentle pace of a Sunday morning. Here, tradition hums softly beneath the modern buzz, from pastel shophouses and storied cafés to spice-scented kitchens and well-worn community ties. It’s this unique charm that sets the stage for the brand-new vibrant cultural festival, Katong Kultura, taking over i12 Katong Atrium from July 4 to 20.

More than just a nod to heritage, this colourful celebration invites you to rediscover Peranakan culture through immersive experiences, complimentary hands-on workshops, live performances, and good old-fashioned fun. It’s part of a wider mission to position i12 Katong as The Heart of Katong, a community space where culture, connection and creativity come together. Whether you’re a lifelong Eastie, a Netflix-fuelled Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story fan, or just culture-curious, this festival invites you to engage with the rich world of Peranakan heritage in exciting, interactive ways. Here are six experiences not to miss at this year’s festival.

Catch the opening ceremony’s theatrical performance

The festival kicks off with a grand opening ceremony featuring the captivating theatrical performance, A Tapestry of Peranakan Stories. You’re also encouraged to come dressed in traditional kebaya or batik to enjoy complimentary access to a delightful Peranakan tea party with iconic Peranakan dishes.

On July 5, from 3pm to 5pm

Experience a Peranakan culinary showcase

As part of the festivities, there’ll be a special Peranakan food demonstration in collaboration with ToTT and Chilli Api. Foodies can look forward to learning how to whip up classics like Nyonya Chap Chye and Nyonya Curry Chicken in this exclusive cooking session led by an experienced chef. It’s a great chance to pick up tips and master the authentic techniques behind these beloved heritage dishes. Register here.

On July 6, 2.30pm to 3.30pm

Step into a Baba mansion

Wander through a Peranakan mansion replica at the Level 1 atrium, decked with a plethora of photo-worthy opportunities. Strike a pose beside colourful tiled walls, kueh displays, and fashion showcases featuring costumes from Mediacorp’s hit series Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story. You can even slip into a batik shirt or kebaya at the try-on booth to really look the part. While you're there, feast your eyes on the Peranakan food showcase with larger-than-life models and the Nyonya Rempah (Spice) Garden too. Complete the stamp rally to score yourself an ice cream – available on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last!

Opens daily from July 4 to 20

Meet and greet Mediacorp Artistes, cast of ‘Emerald Hill’

Then on July 12, Emerald Hill steps off the screen and into the spotlight, as Mediacorp Artistes Sheila Sim and Chantalle Ng host a lively meet-and-greet session packed with games, interviews, and plenty of photo ops. Fans can also snag limited-edition autographed cards, mall vouchers, and exclusive merch.

Craft your own cultural keepsake at weekend workshops

Get hands-on with heritage in the most delightful way. Every weekend, drop in for complimentary craft sessions, from kueh-inspired air-clay modelling and Peranakan tile painting for the community wall to beaded souvenir-making and food demonstrations. There are limited spaces per hour, so make sure you head down early.

Feel the kampong spirit at the finals of a singing competition

On July 19, swing by for the grand finale of the Katong Culture Singing Competition, where local talents belt out folk favourites. It’s like karaoke, but steeped in tradition, and way more wholesome.
