While the Covid-19 pandemic caused plenty of local F&B brands to take a hard hit, it ended up being a blessing in disguise for others – most notably, home-based businesses that sated our cravings when there were restrictions on restaurant dine-ins. Not that we want to harp on that dark time – good riddance – but we can’t talk about Paparch without referencing its pandemic-era roots.
Born in April 2020 as a one-man show, Paparch first began a home-based business, with orders all painstakingly baked in its owner’s home. He saw swift success with many a sweet-tooth raving over his basque burnt cheesecake, and eventually moved to a central kitchen where he gained access to equipment that allowed him to churn out orders more quickly.
Today, more than five years on, Paparch is still very much loved and thriving, and is now starting a new chapter with its first physical outlet at Arab Street. While all cheesecakes previously had to be pre-ordered – or snagged at pop-ups and collaborations with other cafés – you can now simply walk in to pick your favourites off the shelf.
Flavours range from original to more experimental ones like the sweet-savoury miso caramel, chocolate praline, pistachio berries, and the latest, ondeh ondeh. While the outlet is mainly a takeaway store, those who wish to devour their cheesecake on the spot will be given a little disposable tray and spoon to eat from. Although no seats are available, you don’t have to fumble when there are sleek metal tables at the modest dine-in corner.
Paparch is located at 48 Arab Street, #01-03, open daily from 12pm to 8pm. Find out more and make an online order for delivery here.
