We’re seeing a pattern here with the recent exhibitions at Heartware Store & Gallery – one of our favourite new art spaces at Joo Chiat. From Tess Smith-Roberts to maitoparta, the small, independent gallery somehow manages to pull in big-name artists from around the world, and while they all have their own distinct styles, bright colours and fun childlike illustrations are a common thread throughout.
Its latest exhibition, It’s Magic (それは魔法), sings the same tune, with famous Japanese artist Daisuke Kondo displaying his kooky animal-themed works. Not only is this his first solo exhibition in Singapore, it’s also his first solo debut outside of Japan.
On display and available for purchase are the quirky, hand-carved sculptures for which Daisuke Kondo is best known, along with stickers, tees, silk handkerchiefs, prints, and tiny painted matchboxes featuring his vibrant drawings.
The sculptures are on the smaller side, so they’ll sit nicely on any shelf or coffee table without taking too much space. But if you’re looking to go even more minimal, check out the artist’s soap collection, featuring tiny pocket-sized versions of his sculptures that have a practical use to them – not that you’d be able to bear destroying them. Either way, they’re perfect for adding some character to your bathroom.
One can never have too many bits and bobs, so try your luck with a spin or two at the gacha machine, where you’ll get a randomised metal pin featuring one of five collectible designs by the artist.
