Chinatown’s tea culture stands the test of time, with heritage names like Tea Chapter alongside newer entrants like Silk Tea Bar, both still pouring decades of tradition into every delicate cup. Thriving alongside these timeless establishments are numerous beverage chains that cater to modern trends and taste buds.
The two might seem contradictory, but popular Yunnan milk tea brand Chagee strikes the middle ground with its brand-new concept store, Chagee Pagoda House. Taking over a refurbished shophouse in Chinatown, this sit-down tea café and retail store is an inviting, warm-toned one that incorporates traditional elements in its modern design. And just like with a typical Chinese teahouse, this cosy living room-like space is meant to foster conversation and connection over a good brew.
But that’s not all. From November onwards, look forward to curated cultural programmes within the store that pay homage to the area’s rich past. Palm-reading workshops, calligraphy sessions, Nanyang-inspired conversation prompts, and photo walks are just some of the many activities planned for future sippy socials.
Chagee addicts can wear their love for the brand through outlet-exclusive caps, socks, and tees, which are stocked on retail shelves. Drinkware and other lifestyle items are also available for purchase.
During the grand opening weekend from October 31 to November 2, enjoy one-for-one large drinks and partake in a ‘tear and win’ activity, where you’ll rip open a little compartment on your cup for a chance to score prizes, including a luxury bag and limited-edition Chagee collectibles.
This isn’t the first cult-status drink chain branch in Singapore to be located in a heritage space; Starbucks Smith Street – a duplex shophouse outlet with a retail corner and locally inspired art – is a mere two-minute walk away.
Chagee Pagoda House is located at 45/47/49/51 Pagoda Street, open daily from 9am to 10.30pm. Find out more via @chagee.sg on Instagram.
