If your idea of a getaway involves turquoise waters, palm-fringed paths and a level of calm so deep it feels like a full-body reset, there’s a new destination to add to your staycation hit list. The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa, Batam has officially opened its doors – and it’s a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from Singapore’s city.

Occupying an entire private island in Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, the resort is a wellness-focused escape designed to help guests “sleep well, eat well and move well”. Think sunrise yoga sessions by the beach, snorkelling in crystalline shallows, and sunset cocktails overlooking the sea – all wrapped up in a five-star bow.

Westin’s latest outpost blends modern elegance with local heritage – a nod to the island’s Orang Laut community – and it’s all about balance: architecture that complements rather than competes with the landscape, interiors that feel both airy and grounded, and natural textures that mirror the island’s coastal hues.

The resort is home to 94 guest rooms and suites, as well as 52 private villas, all with sweeping ocean views and, on clear days, glimpses of Singapore’s skyline shimmering across the water. Villas are arranged in intimate clusters of two – perfect for families or groups of friends who want to share space without sacrificing serenity.

As with any good escape, dining here is part of the experience. All-day restaurant Island Kitchen serves international and locally inspired plates in a playful interactive setting; Nirup Social Bar & Lounge is the spot to come for slow morning coffees and late-night cocktails; and seafood fans will gravitate toward Salt Simply Seafood, a breezy oceanfront venue serving the day’s freshest catch with panoramic views. At the island’s highest point, Constellate Pool Bar offers 360-degree views for cinematic sundowners.

In excellent news for burnt-out city dwellers, wellness is the guiding principle at The Westin Nirup Island. The on-site spa anchors the experience, offering holistic treatments ranging from Swedish-style massages to tailored aromatherapy rituals, each carried out with the ocean as a backdrop.

For your holiday workout, the fitness studio overlooks the ocean and comes kitted with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment. There’s also a full program of outdoor activities: yoga on the sand, guided island hikes, and water sports that take advantage of the island’s clear, calm bays. Even kids get their own slice of paradise at the Kids Club, an airy, light-filled haven designed to engage young explorers through play and discovery, surrounded by nature.

Beyond wellness retreats and romantic getaways, the resort is primed for events – with a 450-square-metre ballroom and three flexible meeting rooms. For couples dreaming of a beachfront wedding, there are few backdrops more effortlessly beautiful than Nirup’s golden shores.

Getting there is refreshingly easy: a 20-minute ferry ride from Singapore’s Harbourfront Terminal takes you to the shores of this secluded sanctuary, where even the arrival process feels indulgent. There’s on-site customs and immigration, a private marina for yacht docking, and the kind of seamless welcome that makes you forget what “airport stress” even means.
