San Francisco Pickle Fest is exactly the sort of gloriously specific food event that works because nobody is pretending it is anything else. The afternoon centers on pickles in every possible supporting role, from dedicated food menus to pickle cocktails and mocktails, with a complimentary pickle-back shot included with admission. There is also a live band and DJ, so this is closer to a day party than a farmers market with an unusually narrow specialty. The 21-plus format makes sense once the whiskey shots and pickle drinks enter the picture, while the green dress suggestion gives the whole thing a suitably ridiculous visual theme. It runs from noon to 6pm on Saturday, making it easy to fold into a bigger Labor Day weekend without sacrificing the evening. Come hungry, especially if you have ever wondered how far a chef can reasonably take a pickle before it stops being a condiment.
