The long-awaited Carnegie Deli revival is set to open next week and here’s your juicy first look

New York’s towering temple of pastrami is officially coming back from the dead—and yes, the sandwiches remain almost comically enormous.

Carnegie Deli will open Tuesday, September 15 at 834 Seventh Avenue, nearly a decade after its original location closed in 2016. The new restaurant is just a few blocks from the deli’s former home and occupies a space with its own formidable sandwich history: it once housed Stage Deli, Carnegie’s longtime rival in the city’s so-called pastrami wars.

The 2,500-square-foot restaurant will seat 110 diners at closely packed tables, with traditional waiter service and a visible deli counter. Garrett Singer Architecture + Design has filled the space with throwback details, including wood-paneled walls, a front dessert case, the giant pickle and the celebrity-covered Wall of Fame. Original photos and frames from the former restaurant will return, featuring famous patrons ranging from Mel Brooks and Robin Williams to Taylor Swift and a young Venus Williams clutching her namesake sandwich.

The menu brings back the deli’s pastrami ($29) and corned beef ($28), stacked on old-fashioned rye with Düsseldorf mustard and pickles. The Broadway Danny Rose ($37), combining both meats, also returns, along with the open-faced Reuben ($31), chopped liver, matzo ball soup, latkes, knishes and a footlong frank dubbed The Lunch-Before-Lunch ($21).

Meanwhile, the new Carnegie Deli Colossus ($40) piles pastrami, corned beef, turkey, Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing onto rye. Other newcomers include Full Lee Loaded Reuben Fries, fried deli pickle chips and babka French toast. Breakfast brings pastrami, egg and cheese sandwiches, corned beef or pastrami hash and The Full Schmear, featuring Nova and cream cheese on a bagel.

Naturally, cheesecake gets its own spotlight. The classic plain version ($15), served on a cookie crust, joins fresh strawberry and black-and-white varieties, both priced at $16 per slice.

“We want the people who grew up with Carnegie Deli to walk in and immediately recognize it, while giving a whole new generation the chance to make those same memories of their own,” said third-generation owner and CEO Sarri Harper.

Carnegie Deli will be open daily from 11am to 10pm. Seating is walk-in only, so prepare to wait—and arrive very, very hungry.
