Always thinking about food? Yeah, us too. But worry not, Time Out Market New York, Union Square, is here to feed you.
The Manhattan market has a handful of vendors, backed by award-winning talent, ready to nourish you day and night with smashed burgers, stellar sandwiches and all the crab fried rice you can handle. Thirsty? We have that handled, too. All you have to do is saunter up to the 360-degree bar for crafted cocktails, wine and even beer inspired by the Market. But to truly make it a meal, we've made some recommendations to pair your next meal with a drink that matches.
Borough Buck with the Prime NY Strip Beef Bihari from Kebabwala
It would be relatively uncommon to find Wagyu at a roadside kebab stand in India. But lucky for us, Wagyu is a common occurrence at chef Chintan Pandya’s kebab stand in the Market. Here at Kebabwala, marinated hunks of beef hit the grill, cozied next to skewered slices of onions and red peppers. Wonderfully charred, the kebabs are then finished with a fiery and aromatic dusting of red chili, cumin and dried mango powder. For us, we think it is more flavor than fire. But if you need a little help to cull the heat, the Borough Buck ($15) will certainly be up to the task. The vodka mule with pomegranate and lime juices plus a bit of fizz from the ginger beer will surely keep you cool, thanks to a combo of mint syrup plus fresh sprigs of the stuff.
Hakuna Ma-Toddy with The Time Out N.Y. sandwich from Paninoteca by Anthony
The Hakuna Ma-Toddy—what a wonderful phrase. Ready to warm you this season comes a toddy inspired by The Lion King. Swapping out whiskey for mezcal, the warm cocktail stirs in a spoonful of honey, lime juice and chamomile tea. Also ready to keep you cozy? The Time Out N.Y. sandwich from Paninoteca by Anthony. Thin shavings of roast beef are layered with fresh slices of mozzarella, then blanketed with sautéed, saucy onions and plenty of gravy. Pro tip? Order more gravy on the side for dipping.
Rum Punch with the Curried Goat Patty at Patty Palace
Chef Kwame Onwuachi recently rolled out a new patty at his personal palace in the Market: the Curried Goat Patty. Cubes of goat are tossed in his signature blend of green seasoning, seared and wrapped up in a turmeric-dusted dough that's shaped into a patty. Once baked, the patties are placed in a coco bread bun, and generously finished with a gingery cabbage and lashings of jerk BBQ and green seasoning aioli. To complete the trip to the islands, we highly recommend tacking on the Rum Punch ($14), a fruity blend of pineapple and blood orange juice, with a dash of spice from the cinnamon syrup. Rum and a patty? Is there a more perfect pairing?
The Mane Event with the Lombardi Pizza from Fornino
The Mane Event may just put a little hair on your chest. Also inspired by The Lion King, the Maker's Mark-forward drink is balanced with sweet vermouth, a herbaceous amaro nonino and a few dashes of Angostura bitters. But one of the main events from Forinino? It has to go to the Lombardi Pizza. The Neapolitan white pie is layered with curls of prosciutto, mozzarella, Parmesan, arugula and shavings of lemon zest.
The Smoking Lady with the Grilled Pork Jowl with steamed buns from Kam Rai Thai
If you didn’t know already, chef Dhanapol “Oak” Marprasert has a thing for barbecue. He’s been known to fuse Thai flavors with the smoke and the flame of the grill, so much so that his grilled and marinated pork jowl buns won him big at Staten Island's yearly barbecue fest, Pig Island NYC. Now you can find these bao buns at the Market. For even more smoke, pair it with The Smoking Lady ($15) cocktail. The mezcal brings its signature aroma and flavor of fire, balanced by the sweetness of fresh-puréed pear and rosemary syrup.
Broadway and Bourbon and the Classic Smashed from Smashed Express
Bourbon and a burger always sounds like a plan. Make it a guarantee by ordering the Broadway and Bourbon cocktail ($14), made with a pour of Maker's Mark, a dash of cinnamon syrup and chocolate bitters. Find a match with the Classic Smashed from Smashed Express, as crispy thin burgers feature griddled onions pressed right into the patty. But to truly make it Ron Swanson-approved, up the ante and order your smash burger with triple the patties.
