New York’s cabaret scene is getting a dose of trans joy this month, and it's not even Pride! Trans Voices Cabaret, the showcase celebrating trans and nonbinary performers and creators, returns to Manhattan on Saturday, September 19, for an evening of music, comedy and performance at Caveat on the Lower East Side.
Trans Voices Cabaret has carved out a space for trans artists to take center stage and showcase work that doesn’t always get the spotlight it deserves. The September lineup features live talents including Ernest Allen, Roachee Babee, Sam Campos, Rylynn Davis, X Hernandez, Jalen Jones, Natalia Ramos and Jett Roberts. TVC creator Donnie Cianciotto will emcee, with musical direction by Farrah Rotman.
“It’s more important than ever to focus on trans joy and creativity. Trans joy is resistance,” Cianciotto said in a statement. “We’re grateful as always to be back at Caveat where we can celebrate the diversity, talent, and resilience of the trans and nonbinary community. Expect an incredible evening!”

And while “cabaret” might conjure images of a single singer in a spotlight crooning through the Great American Songbook, this is a decidedly more contemporary proposition. Expect a mix of performance styles and personalities, with the evening designed as a celebration of trans voices rather than a solemn lecture. Created in 2017 by trans actor and producer Cianciotto, Trans Voices Cabaret's purpose is to give trans and nonbinary performers an opportunity to work together.
The rest of the month is equally compelling at Caveat. September offerings include literary-meets-burlesque spectacle Books and Burlesque on September 12, and sketch comedy Fun in Moderation on September 19. Science nerds get their moment on September 23 with Science Tonight! — A Climate Carol, a very Caveat-y blend of science and comedy timed to Climate Week. There’s also Tom D’s Big New York Show, a tour of the city through history, trivia and comedy, and Modern Whitney (September 12), in which comedians attempt to explain what famous artworks mean before an art expert reveals the truth. In other words, there's something for everyone this month.
