From a dance ritual at Lincoln Center to the return of the Tribute in Light, New York is marking the 25th anniversary of September 11 with thoughtful ceremonies, live performances and opportunities to serve. A quarter-century after the 9/11 attacks, New York City is gathering once again to remember those we love and lost, recognize the responders who carried the city through its darkest days, and consider how the tragedy continues to shape life here.
This year’s commemorations range from solemn traditions to rousing concerts, eye-opening exhibitions and volunteer projects. Here are 11 ways to take part this week and in the months ahead:
See the "Table of Silence" at Lincoln Center
More than 150 dancers and musicians will fill Josie Robertson Plaza for Buglisi Dance Theatre’s annual ritual for peace. The free, 50-minute performance begins at 8am on September 11; an open sunset rehearsal takes place September 10 at 7 pm.
Revisit 9/11 through the media
The Paley Museum’s “9/11 Through the Media Lens: 25 Years Later” brings together journalists, photographers and historians who documented the attacks. The September 10 program begins at 6:30pm; tickets are $25 and $20 for members.
Welcome the Ride for Resilience
More than 200 firefighters and supporters will complete a 343-mile ride from Boston on September 10. After arriving at Ground Zero, the cyclists will gather for a 2pm ceremony in Battery Park.
Learn how engineers helped rebuild the city
“Engineering Resilience,” beginning at 8am September 10 at the Union League Club, examines the structural response, investigation, building-code changes and redevelopment that followed the attacks.
Watch the name-reading ceremony
The private September 11 ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial begins at 8:40am and will be livestreamed for the public. For the first time, a seventh moment of silence will honor people who later died from 9/11-related illnesses and injuries. The Memorial will reopen to the public that afternoon.
Look up at the Tribute in Light
The twin beams will rise above Lower Manhattan from dusk on September 11 through dawn the following morning. The Memorial Plaza reopens to the public at 3 pm.
Watch the Subway Series tribute
The Yankees and Mets begin a three-game series in the Bronx at 6:30pm September 11, with a pregame ceremony honoring victims and first responders.
Attend a memorial concert at MSG
The NYPD Pipes and Drums headline “A Night of Remembrance” at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden on September 12. Doors open at 6pm; tickets cost $150.
Visit a new exhibition about service
Opening September 12, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s “In Their Honor” explores how grief inspired 25 years of volunteerism and community action.
Help the city’s living memorial grow
The Daffodil Project will distribute 500,000 bulbs across all five boroughs in October. Bulb registration is closed, but New Yorkers can still volunteer at the community events—and enjoy the results when the city turns yellow next spring.
Share a photo of the September sky
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s annual “Remember the Sky” campaign invites people to photograph the sky wherever they are on September 11, then post the image with a memory or tribute using the hashtags #NeverForget911 and #RememberTheSky.
