The sonic strengths found on Ernest Greene's first release as Washed Out, the Life of Leisure EP, were only bolstered by the addition of producer Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Christina Aguilera, Animal Collective). Greene's Sub Pop–issued debut LP, Within and Without, is a more polished affair without sacrificing the early recording's breeziness. Leading off for Mr. Greene is fastidiously fractured indie pop from Montreal in the form of Grimes and warm, retro radio-rock grooves from Blood Orange, the latest project from Devonte Hynes (of Lightspeed Champion).
