The California band Dawes features brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, the sons of Tower of Power singer Lenny Goldsmith. The band recently released a lovely album, North Hills, its every song draped in a mournfulness reminiscent of My Morning Jacket. Vetiver’s Andy Cabic may never fully escape the shadow of friend and frequent collaborator Devendra Banhart, but really, Banhart’s pretty tall, and Vetiver stands on its own merits just fine. Peter Wolf Crier’s Jagjaguwar debut, Inter-Be, shares stylistic traits with Bon Iver—indeed, this duo of multi-instrumentalist Peter Pisano and drummer Brian Moen sprang forth from the same Wisconsin scene as Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Inter-Be is a dense yet stark record, stenciled with simple melodies and unapologetically austere instrumental work.
