William “Bootsy” Collins legendarily invented the slinky bassline that locked James Brown’s “Sex Machine” into one of the most ecstatic funk grooves of all time, before joining Parliament-Funkadelic, George Clinton’s sprawling band of acid-funk explorers. Latest disc Tha Funk Capital of the World features guest shots from Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Chuck D, and finds Collins intent on keeping the fun in funk music. Good show, we say.
