Kurosawa adapts Dostoyevsky’s masterpiece with Masayuki Mori, Setsuko Hara and Toshiro Mifune. It was originally four and a half hours long, but producers demanded the film be cut to its present length. (“Better cut it lengthwise,” A.K. quipped.)
