Kinoshita's tale of a Japanese family preparing for one of their own to go to war seems like a pure propaganda piece, until a superbly ambivalent climax in which star Kinuyo Tanaka does one of the most moving pieces of acting ever committed to celluloid. For that alone it's worth seeing.
