Right now, if you walk east on 42nd Street, you’ll get a stellar view of Grand Central’s façade with its giant clock, Hercules statue and Tiffany glass. But not for long.
Its next-door neighbor in the square between Vanderbilt and Madison and 42nd and 43rd was demolished over the past year to make room for a brand-new glass building, One Vanderbilt. The 63-story, 1,401-foot tower will be the tallest building in Midtown and the second tallest in NYC after One World Trade. It will have office spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows, retail stores and an underground passageway to Grand Central.
The tower’s groundbreaking ceremony is today, and it’s scheduled to be completed by 2020.
