Shai Kremer, "Fallen Empires"

Past and present are layered in these photographs by Kremer, an Israeli artist who takes the politically charged landscape of her country as a subject. On view are scenes of ancient ruins—dating from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras—jostling with such contemporary presences as surveillance cameras or wreckage from recent wars.
