Jordan Casteel, “Brothers”

Casteel’s figurative paintings possess a blunt earnestness in both subject and style, qualities especially evident in this show of eight new oils. Each explores the relationship between the male members of different African-American families—fathers and sons, brothers, cousins, etc.—seated side-by-side in dual portraits, representing a departure from Casteel’s previous paintings, which concentrated on individual men.
