Smith’s punchy paintings, which include depictions of a baseball-bat Medusa, a high heel stepping on a tongue and a Roy Lichtenstein mirror surrounded by the animated brooms that went berserk in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, have the look of graphics from the 1960s and ’70s: Part Yellow Submarine, part Fillmore East poster. They also recall the Pop Art-S/M stylings of’60s artist Richard Lindner.
