Chantal Joffe

Joffe, who turns images sourced from photos into expressionistic portraits recalling Alice Neel and other neo-primitives—has mounted a salon-style hanging of 34 canvases in The Jewish Museum’s lobby. Each features a likeness a of notable Jewish woman from the 20th century. Diane Arbus, Gertrude Stein and Claude Cahun are among those pictured.
