Alice Neel, “Drawings and Watercolors 1927–1978”

Most of the work in this show comes from the early part of Neel’s career, when she was living uptown in Harlem in very bohemian circumstances involving little money and a string of lovers, including some with whom she had children. The images here, which appear startlingly fresh, offer an insight into her uncompromising eye and incomparable mastery of intimate expressionistic portraiture.
