Joia Beach is a breath of fresh air—literally, this breezy outdoor restaurant and beach club is perched along an idyllic stretch of waterfront on an island in the middle of Biscayne Bay. But it’s also refreshing in the sense that it’s not the over-the-top scene I had imagined. Or rather, Joia Beach can be that scene: bottle service, electronic DJs, flashy displays of wealth. But there’s a lot more here, too, a sense of soul that similar Miami venues lack, and actually really great food.
The vibe: Located on Watson Island, a quick hop from Downtown, Joia Beach is the only beachfront spot in the city proper where you can dine with your toes in the sand—and it leans into that energy. This self-described “social resort” is a boho chic-styled oasis where you can partake in al fresco Pilates and lounge on plush daybeds by morning, sip spritzes at sunset and dine and dance under the moonlight until late. Guests can arrive via yacht (and do) by anchoring offshore and pulling up via private tender, à la St. Tropez.
The food: Joia Beach’s European-inspired menu skews Mediterranean, with dishes like grilled octopus, lobster citrus salad, hamachi crudo and pistachio-herb lamb chops executed to perfection with seasonal ingredients and a bit of Miami flair. A well-rounded meal here may also include a fresh pasta (the garlicky lobster linguine with white wine and red pepper flakes is a winner), pides (boat-shaped Turkish flatbreads) or a steak from the butcher’s block.
The drink: Get into the mood with a Joia Coconut Colada, their signature piña colada served in a coconut. The Sandia Sunset, made with blanco tequila, watermelon, Aperol and jalapeño, is dangerously chuggable under the Miami sun. Though they all evoke something you’d sip on vacation, these cocktails are well balanced and refreshing—not overly sweet or one-note.
Time Out tip: For a more chilled scene that still brings the energy, go for one of Joia’s signature Sunset Sessions. Every Thursday from 5 to 9pm, the venue kicks off the weekend early with live DJs set against sparkling views plus specials on food and drinks. Got littles in tow? Kids are welcome and will love playing in the sand between courses.
