Party season is well and truly upon us, and as strong as Melbourne’s rooftop bar game may be, new research suggests that the great outdoors is the hottest Christmas destination for 2025. According to new data from Hipcamp, Australians are doubling down on nature-focused getaways this festive season, with Christmas bookings up 14 per cent year-on-year. The app’s Victorian campsites are in particularly high demand, with bookings skyrocketing 23 per cent overall.

The standout region is the Western Grampians, where demand has exploded by an incredible 92 per cent – proof that when it comes to festive season escapes, bush camping chairs are giving beach towels a run for their money.

“Victoria’s rivers, lakes and forests are drawing families and friends looking to slow down, unplug and enjoy a genuine outdoor break,” says Brooke Wood, Australian Marketing Manager at Hipcamp. “While beach camping dominates elsewhere in the country, in Victoria we’re seeing incredible demand for riverside stays that combine swimming, campfires and easy access to nature.”

This year’s most sought-after filters? Pet-friendly sites and anywhere you can swim. Tents and swags continue to reign supreme, further proving that Victorians are embracing the uncomplicated charm of an old-school camping setup.

If you’re still searching for a place to pitch your tent (or roll out your swag), Hipcamp has rounded up five Victorian campgrounds still offering at least some availability for the Christmas period.

Redbank Farm, Metcalfe

Franks Farm, Trafalgar East
Only 90 minutes from the city, Frank’s Farm is home to a handful of unpowered sites beside a lake-style dam with sweeping paddock views. Best for self-contained campers, it’s a Gippsland favourite for low-fuss stays with campfires, sunsets and fresh country air.
