Victoria’s piers have been having a moment, with a good handful of our state’s beautiful waterfront (and over-water) landmarks getting some big upgrades over the last few years. Now, another of Victoria’s favourite seaside spots is officially set for a glow-up, with work on a brand-new St Leonards Pier due to begin early next year.
The Victorian Government has recently appointed Simpsons Construction (the people behind the recently renovated Altona Pier and St Kilda Pier) as the lead contractor for the long-awaited rebuild, with construction expected to be completed by the end of 2027. And the good news for anyone who likes spending summer by the water (read: everyone) is that the existing pier will remain open throughout the upcoming peak summer period, including access to the ever-popular Sirens Kiosk.
According to the government, the idea behind the redesign is to make the St Leonards Pier more safe and more accessible, while still catering to the activities that have made the spot a local fave for a long time. The plans include wheelchair-accessible fishing spots, curved seating overlooking Port Phillip Bay and a low landing with stairs for easier access to the water for the sake of things like boating, diving and snorkelling.
To speed things up, demolition of the existing pier and construction of the new one will happen concurrently wherever possible, reducing the overall construction period. Major construction on the new pier is set to start early next year.
