Chef Deepak Mishra is set to open Bungalow 147 by the Bay in a 130-capacity Williamstown building this summer

Spice enthusiasts, pay attention. Melbourne’s inner west is scoring a new spot for regional Indian cuisine, with chef Deepak Mishra set to open Bungalow 147 by the Bay in Williamstown this summer. Housed in a heritage building overlooking Hobsons Bay, the 130-seat restaurant, wine bar and event space will bring together top-tier Aussie produce, regional Indian flavours and contemporary European techniques. The aim? To shine a light on the often-overlooked food traditions of eastern India.
For a little background, Mishra is no stranger to Melbourne’s luxury dining scene – having worked the pans of The Hotel Windsor, Hotel Chadstone and The Langham Melbourne. He is also Vice President of Bocuse d’Or Australia and coaches Team Australia at the prestigious international culinary competition – so this is someone who knows his way around a kitchen. In recent years, his work as Culinary Director at Mornington Peninsula winery Avani Wines has seen him explore the intersection of regional Indian cuisine, seasonal Australian produce and thoughtful wine pairings. Now, he’s bringing that approach to a venue of his own right here in Melbs.
“After almost thirty years in luxury hotel kitchens, I wanted to create something of my own,” Mishra says. “Bungalow 147 brings together my European culinary expertise, my Indian heritage and the style of cooking I’ve developed at Avani.”
According to the team, the menu at Bungalow 147 will draw on the food traditions of Odisha and Bengal, combining seasonal Victorian produce and native Australian ingredients with flavours from across the Indian subcontinent. The full menu is yet to be released, but we're expecting a share-style situation with Indian breads, snacks, larger hot dishes and creative desserts.
“Eastern India has some of the country’s most extraordinary food, and it remains underrepresented in Melbourne,” Mishra says. “I’m excited to have the chance to bring those flavours to Bungalow 147, where everyone feels at home.”
The restaurant will come to life in a historic building at 147 Nelson Place, with a downstairs dining room and wine bar opening onto a courtyard and veranda. Interiors by Micaela Cancino (Studio Argil) will take inspiration from traditional Indian bungalow culture – all lime-washed walls, aged timber, brass accents and soft drapery. Upstairs, private dining rooms and flexible event spaces overlooking the bay will be available to book for group dinners and parties.
On the drinks front, wine will be a major part of the experience – with a list spanning boutique Victorian producers and other Australian labels. Rohit Singh, second-generation winemaker at Avani, will help shape the selection, while cocktails will incorporate Indian-inspired ingredients and flavours (including tea, citrus and spice).
Bungalow 147 by the Bay is set to open in summer 2026 at 147 Nelson Place, Williamstown. You can learn more and register for updates over here.
