Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street is now open – complete with 195 rooms and a sky-high terrace bar

Melbourne’s hotel scene has just welcomed a new sky-high addition – complete with impressive design cred and a terrace bar that’s primed for sunset drinks.
The newly opened Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street has opened its doors on the western edge of the CBD – the largest purpose-built hotel to open in the city this year. Backed by a $90 million investment, the 18-storey property brings 195 guest rooms, six suites, a restaurant, bar and gym to this fast-evolving little pocket of the city.
Located at 492 La Trobe Street, the hotel sits in a sweet spot between city buzz and leafy calm. Guests are a six-minute walk from Southern Cross Station, eight minutes from Marvel Stadium, and roughly 12 minutes from Queen Victoria Market, with the greenery of Flagstaff Gardens just around the corner.
According to the team, Sora Interiors and architects from LiFE Architecture have woven subtle nods to the building’s former incarnation as a tinsmith factory throughout the space – with sheer drapery and soft lighting tempering the industrial references with a calm, retreat-like mood.
Upstairs, guest rooms are bathed in natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, with views stretching towards Docklands, the CBD skyline and North Melbourne. Want to go luxe? Perched on the 16th floor, the hotel’s crown jewel suite (Suite 1603) features a two-person freestanding bathtub positioned against a window overlooking the city.
On level six you’ll find Foundry, the property’s restaurant and bar, where bronze mirrors, reeded glass and a three-metre marble island anchor the open kitchen. The bar spills out onto an open-air terrace overlooking Flagstaff Gardens and the skyline, one of the few outdoor drinking spots in this stretch of the CBD.
The project marks the first hospitality venture for Melb-based development company Spacious Group, and according to the team, sustainability has been baked into the design from the start. The building carries a five-star Green Star rating, with solar panels generating renewable energy, smart LED lighting, high-performance insulation and EV charging stations on-site.
