Where to drink mulled wine in Melbourne this winter

Intimate CBD cocktail haunt Bar Clara has brought back its famous mulled wine this winter: a comforting concoction of red wine, spiced syrup, cacao nibs, cherries, winter spices and fresh orange to garnish. At $16 a glass, it's the only thing you need on a cold, wet day after work. Can't be bothered getting off the couch? Collingwood-based bottleshop, wine bar and haven for all things wine, Glou Melbourne is serving up cups of ze proper glühwein this winter and if it's anything like last year's, it'll be made from a biodynamic drop that makes it all the more smashable. At happy hour (or if your BYO vessel) it's $12 for 200 delicious millilitres of the stuff. Grab a cup at Glou, a bottle to take away or you can bring a reusable cup for a warming winter stroll. What a cute date night idea!

How good is West Footscray's Harley and Rose? Not only is it slinging incredible parmas, epic weekday specials and some of the best fried chicken in town, it also won our Best Casual Dining Restaurant award in 2018 and importantly during the winter months, you can get a delectable mulled wine (housemade, of course) for just $10.

One of our reviewers once called Goldy's Tavern "the Benjamin Button of pubs", credit to venue's remaining cooler than ever 150 years since opening. Once the haunt of Chopper Read back when it was known as Leinster Arms Hotel, it now acts as a little oasis from the chaos in Fitzroy’s backstreets. This winter, you can pop in for a mulled wine that's only $8 from 3-6pm Monday to Friday. The bar staff claim this year it's been "jazzed up with the unholiest of spices." Yeah baby, count us in.

Mark your calendars and grab your warmest winter woolies, Melburnians: Queen Victoria Market's beloved Winter Night Market is back. From June 4 to August 27 you can spend cosy Wednesday evenings enjoying live entertainment, huddling around open fires and feasting on goodies from a selection of global street food stalls, carts, trucks and festival bars. And when you get thirsty, there'll be rivers of warm butter beer, ginger beer, and – you guessed it – mouthwatering mulled wine.

Living in or close to Richmond? Then you'll probably already know that Atlas Vinifera is a wine lover's haven. And luckily for locals, this winter it's brought back its insanely delish mulled wine that you can drink in or takeaway. Just take a look at this impeccably presented drop!

Going out on your own is something most people avoid, but then a venue like Willows and Wine comes along to make a solo mission seem downright desirable, perched with a book in one hand and a shiraz in the other. We’re talking about West Melbourne’s bookshop bar, which is the perfect solution to homebodies who want to get out more. We honestly can't think of anything more idyllic than a big fat pageturner and a cup of mulled wine, which is exactly what you can get here. If the perpetual line snaking out from its entrance is anything to go by, Section 8 is one CBD haunt that never gets old. It's also a reliable spot to grab a mulled wine with friends in the cooler months. Next time you find yourself hankering for a proper German Glühwein, rug up in your warmest jacket and head to Tattersalls Lane to enjoy this lively open-air bar's refined mix of vino, triple sec, star anise, brandy, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

You don't need to venture to the French Alps; you can experience winter magic right here in Melbourne. Come mid-May, Fed Square is set to transform into a charming alpine village, complete with wooden chalets, fire pits, and, most importantly, bubbling cauldrons of cheese and chocolate – need we say more? For six weeks only, from May 15 to June 22, the Fondue Chalet pop-up invites you to gather up the gang, get rounds of mulled wine to keep warm and indulge in an après-ski experience without ever having to leave the city.

Take a stroll over the Evan Walker pedestrian footbridge that runs from Flinders Street Station to Southbank and you’ll notice something happening underfoot. No, it’s not the tourist boats zooming down the Yarra River. It’s Ponyfish Island, a riverside bar that’s latched underneath the busy thoroughfare. If you think it looks chilly by the water, though, think again: just in time for winter, the bar is once more slinging their OG mulled wine for $11 a cup. Ponyfish is open from 11am daily and walk-ins are welcome, so you can get your warm liquor fix all day (and all week) long.

At Mjolner, a Norse mythology-themed bar under Hardware Lane, you'll be able to warm up aching knuckles like the Vikings with a punchy mulled wine. Mjolner's is made with cognac, port, juniper, wood and cranberries, blazed and served hot with a house spice teabag.

When you enter P.J. O'Brien's, you'll find the walls splashed with Irish paraphernalia and suspended TV screens playing the rugby. It's a vibrant space often filled with live music and hawking traditional Irish grub and, of course, beloved Irish beverages like Guinness and single-malt whiskies. And in winter, they whisk out the warmers like mulled wine, hot toddy, Irish coffee, and Jameson and orange hot chocolate. We can't think of a cosier place in Southbank for a drink on a bitter chilly night.

Watch the rowboats glide past with some hand-held climate control. Classically spiced and made with red wine and Frangelico, it's a mulled wine that hits the spot. Bonus points, this bar also cranks the heat up in wintertime with boozy hot milo and boozy brandy-spiked Biscoff to round out your drinks order. Yep, we could definitely sit here all night long.

This heartful restaurant in Brunswick East (and winner of our Best Relaxed Dining Venue award for 2025) is heaving with good house party vibes, thanks to rivers of vodka, proper authentic Polish food and yes – magically good cups of mulled wine.

Lygon Street's wine nerd paradise ReWine will be serving mulled wine by the barrel-load at the Winter Night Market throughout its duration from 5pm each Wednesday. Their famous version is generously infused with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, star anise, cardamom, chilli, vanilla bean, bay leaves, sugar and orange, and it’s only $10 a serve, plus a $2 deposit on a returnable cup. Prefer to make it at home? ReWine also sells a syrup to add to your own wine mix, perfect if bracing the outdoors to get your fix seems way too arduous.

Neighbourhing Elsternwick train station, the Goat house restaurant is a friendly suburban locale with heated outdoor seating, a bar and a crowd-pleasing menu of brunch and pub-style dishes available all day long. Not only does this spot do a pretty great coffee around these parts, but you can also step in for a $15 mulled wine by the cosy wood fireplace.

An award-winning bar and café in South Wharf, The Boatbuilders Yard captures the charm of Melbourne's Maritime precinct with a modern fitout housed inside an original historic shed. Its mulled wine is your classic, run-of-the-mill hot stuff that's perfectly spiced and is best enjoyed by the venue's fireplace.

Your fave boozy Brunswick dive just got better thanks to a sweet drop of winter goodies to tide you by until spring. Think apple mulled wine, beans and hoodies on sale (we'll take a set, please) DJs on the decks from 9pm and a daily happy hour from 4pm until 6pm. We likey.

From the tres fabuleux team that brought us Parisian dessert paradise Roule Galette, Croque Monsieur is the little brother spot to visit for Melbourne's best take on the iconic French ham and bechamel toastie. With homemade soups on the menu and mulled ciders, too, this humble laneway café may just have what it takes to soothe those winter blues. Prefer mulled wine to cider? You're in luck – the former is served next door at Roule Galette.
