Time Out says

When the former Downtown Ace Hotel first opened in early 2014, we didn’t just gain a super hip hotel in a then-up-and-coming part of DTLA. We also got a jaw-droppingly beautiful performing arts space. Then known as the Theatre at Ace Hotel, it got its start as a 1920s movie palace screening films for the United Artists film studio founded by D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. Since the theater’s reopening, it’s hosted an impressive lineup of performances, concerts, movie nights, lectures and more.

Today, it’s been renamed the United Theater on Broadway (after the Ace Hotel’s closure) and is a bit sparser when it comes to programming. But the 1,600-seat house has retained its stunningly ornate, three-story lobby. When you visit, make sure to step out from under the balcony to admire the vaulted ceiling with thousands of shimmering mirrors.

What’s on

A24 in Concert

We’re pretty spoiled when it comes to live scores in Los Angeles, whether it’s orchestra-backed screenings at the Hollywood Bowl or ensemble-accompanied showings at iconic movie palaces. Time to add another very cool entry to that second category: Wordless Music, Sister Midnight and KCRW will host a series of live scores of A24 films at the architecturally-stunning United Theater on Broadway in Downtown L.A. The lineup includes Under the Skin (Feb 20) with the 30-person Worldless Music Orchestra, Pearl (June 12) and Heriditary (Oct 23) with a 40-member variation of the same ensemble, and Eighth Grade (Dec 11) featuring a three-person electronic outfit.

Hercules vs. Vampires

LA Opera and the United Theater on Broadway (formerly the Ace) once again join forces for a chilling mash-up of live music and film. This year’s featured presentation is Hercules vs. Vampires, an over-the-top 1961 cult fantasy starring Christopher Lee and former Mr. Universe Reg Park. The campy flick will receive a brand-new original score with live orchestra and opera. Even better? The Halloween-night screening will be followed by an after-party with themed drinks, a DJ and a costume contest—with a cash prize of $10,000!

Atsuko Okatsuka

You’ve possibly seen Atsuko Okatsuka’s viral videos on Instagram and TikTok, often dancing with her grandma or killing it in a colorful outfit—or both. But her comedy routines transcend phone-sized screens—there’s a reason she was in our 2019 class of L.A.’s “comedians to watch”—with expertly-delivered bits on the people-pleasing skills she picked up as a cheerleader at Venice High School, her dual daytime and nighttime personas, and just really enjoying sitting on the couch and being surrounded by ranch. Catch her at the United Theater recording her upcoming Netflix special.
