Supermoons are a sight to behold. Two to four times a year, when its at its fullest and reaches its closest point to our planet, the moon appears in our sky even more luminous and impressive than normal. In fact, it can appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the average full moon.
The first supermoon of 2025 rose above London’s skyline earlier this month, but don’t worry if you missed it – there are more on the way. A supermoon will dramatically illuminate the city twice more before the year is up.
From their exact dates and times to the best places to moongaze, here’s your guide to catching sight of catching November and December’s supermoons.
What is a supermoon?
The moon orbits around the Earth in a sort of egg shape rather than a perfect circle. So, a supermoon happens when the moon reaches its perigee in its orbit (its closest point to the Earth) at the same time as a full moon, meaning that it appears much bigger and brighter to us than usual.
Supermoon 2025 dates and times
The first of the upcoming supermoons will be the Beaver Moon (named after the heightened activity of beavers at this time of year) on Wednesday, November 5. It’ll rise at around 3.55pm but won’t be at its most spectacular until after the sun has set and the sky is at its darkest.
The next supermoon, known as the Cold Moon, will arrive a month later on Thursday, December 4,. That one will rise at 2.48pm but, once again, the best time to see it will be much later on when the sky is completely dark.
The best places in London to see the supermoon
To see the supermoons in their full glory, you’ll want to find somewhere high up with an unobstructed view of the sky and with as little light pollution as possible. Parks tend to be your best bet. Primrose Hill, Greenwich Park and Parliament Hill will all give you good panoramic views of the sky and Morden Hall Park is the best place to go for escaping the glow of the city. Let’s just hope the skies are clear.
