If you’re on the hunt for outdoorsy things to see and do in London, the southwestern borough of Richmond is one of the capital’s best places for it. Home to the likes of Richmond Park, Bushy Park, Kew Gardens and one of the most gorgeous stretches of the Thames Path, Richmond is a top London borough for getting some fresh air.
And soon there’ll be even more ways to enjoy Richmond’s lush open spaces. Richmond Council has unveiled a new draft policy that includes holding more events in the area’s parks, open spaces and commons. Outdoor cinema, pop-up theatre, neighbourhood festivals and community events are the type of things that the council is looking to host more of.
The draft policy intends to encourage more events, but it will also put limits on the size and frequency of them, as well as their hours of operation. At a time when some London councils are coming under fire for hosting events in public parks, Richmond Council’s proposal includes a commitment to protecting air quality, reducing waste, and ensuring events have benefits for locals (such as jobs).

Councillor Julia Neden-Watts commented on the policy: ‘Our aim is to promote opportunities for people to come together at events in our parks and open spaces, making the most of Richmond’s culture and sense of community, while protecting the landscapes we all treasure.’
Richmond Council’s draft policy is still subject to consultation, though it is expected to be adopted later this year. You can read the policy here and take part in the consultation here. The consultation closes on October 5 2025.
