The eco-friendly Mayfair hotel with a Michelin-starred chef that is officially the best five-star hotel in London right now

If you’re after straight-up, no-limits luxury, London more than has you covered. This city dazzles with glorious shopping options, extremely fancy restaurants and hotels built to cater to every need. If you’re looking for the heights of such luxury, look no further: here at Time Out we just overhauled our list of the city’s five-star hotels, naming 12 establishments that are truly the crème de la crème of London’s hotel scene.

To make the list, a hotel didn’t just have to receive a five-star hotel review from Time Out (in itself a very impressive feat). These are the very, very best, ranging from the world-renowned glitz of Claridge’s to the shiny modern luxe of Shangri-La at the Shard.

A dozen hotels made the longlist, but only one could be crowned the greatest five-star hotel in London right now. That honour went to 1 Hotel Mayfair, the eco-luxury brand’s first outpost in the capital.

1 Hotel Mayfair bills itself as ‘London’s first mission-driven luxury hotel’ and it’s proud of its eco-conscious credentials. Before you start thinking of crusty compost loos however, know that 1 Hotel Mayfair offers an astonishingly slick take on eco-friendliness.

Time Out hotel reviewer Nicola Brady said of the Berkeley Street establishment: ‘This is a place where pared-back luxury meets sustainability, but done so seamlessly you don’t even realise you’re being green.’

Brady described the hotel, which opened in 2023, as ‘absolute perfection’ and ‘a luxurious break without any hint of pretension or snootiness’. She picked out highlights ranging from the plant-filled aesthetic and detail-oriented turndown service to the fact that there’s a yoga mat and foam roller in every room.

And that’s just the tip of 1 Hotel Mayfair’s many appeals. In-house restaurant Dovetale is helmed by two-Michelin-starred chef Tom Sellers, while cocktail bar Dover Yard serves ‘the best spicy margarita’ and ‘exceptional’ breakfasts.
