PSA to anyone travelling around central London over the coming weeks! Southwark Underground station will be shut for several hours every weekday for the next month. Jubilee services won’t be stopping at the station during certain times from August 17 until September 11.
The good news is that the closure shouldn’t affect most people who use Southwark to commute. The station will only be shut between 9.45am and 4.15pm from Monday to Friday, so rush hour won’t be impacted.
TfL says that the tube station is closing in order for extensive construction work above ground to take place. Two mixed-use buildings are being erected on top of the site, with student accommodation, affordable homes, a retail and cafe space, a shared community garden and a play area.
While Southwark is shut, passengers can get on and off the Jubilee line at Waterloo, an eight-to-10-minute walk away. You could also use Blackfriars or Elephant & Castle stations and hop on the 40 or 63 bus routes to and from the Southwark area.
Did you see that the Bakerloo line’s ancient trains are finally being replaced?
