Sketch in Mayfair pulls off a feat that few other restaurants do. Its interiors, from the egg toilet cubicles to the dining room hung with woven cocoons, are famously Instagrammable, but unlike other places, its focus on aesthetics doesn’t come at the expense of its food. That too, is genuinely impressive.
Now, ever committed to the arts, Sketch has just unveiled a bold redesign of its entrance to coincide with the London Design Festival. It called upon French designer Camille Walala (the artist behind the funky Dream Come True building in Shoreditch) to transform its entrance for the autumn. Created in collaboration with Grey Goose Vodka, Walala has turned the section into a vibrant abstract cityscape in her signature style, influenced by the Memphis movement, Ndebele art and Victor Vasarely.
When you walk into the restaurant, you’ll see a wall of geometric patterns in a ’70s-inspired colour palette of reds, purples, greens and black and white. It’s been furnished with a pair of retro purple chairs by French interior designer Pierre Paulin.
While the installation is running, the restaurant will put on a special programme of food, drink and experiences. There’ll be a selection of Grey Goose cocktails including a vodka martini and the ‘Blueprint’, a concoction of white peach and rosemary vodka and peach liqueur with fresh lemon and rosemary bitters.
Walala said of her piece: ‘I love the feel of sketch, the design of it, it’s such an original, creative and inspiring place. I’ve been touched to be asked to work on the entrance. My work is always inspired by architecture and the shapes I find in the everyday and with this piece, I wanted something warm, but bold: I want people to smile the moment they walk in.’
You’ll be able to see the installation in the entrance of Sketch from now until November 10.
