East London’s Rich Mix has paused its cinema screenings for the next 12 months.
The charity-run arts venue and cinema in Shoreditch is undertaking significant renovations after receiving a £2.2 million Art Council grant.
According to Tower Hamlets Slice, the renovation will include ‘creating a new entrance on Redchurch Street, an outdoor cafe space, and improvements to the building’s accessibility, air conditioning and lifts’.
While its cinema programme will be on pause, Rich Mix will remain open for gigs and festivals.
‘The building remains open this autumn, with a busy programme of live events,’ says a Rich Mix spokesperson.
‘This includes our recently announced London, From the Margins season – a special programme of music, talks and occasional film screenings celebrating the sounds, spaces and communities that have shaped London’s underground culture.’
Voted one of London’s best cinemas by Time Out readers in 2017, Rich Mix has been a cinema, music venue and arts hub since 2006. It has recently been a venue for SXSW London screenings, as well as the LOUD Women festival.
The new-look cinema is earmarked for reopening in autumn 2027.
Rich Mix-goers looking for local cinema options in the meantime should head for the nearby Close-Up Cinema, Curzon Hoxton, Everyman Broadgate, or Genesis Cinema on Mile End Road.
