In case you didn’t already know, Mondo Sando does absolutely impeccable sandwiches. The Peckham spot’s hefty, jam-packed subs have people forming a long, orderly queue every single weekend and are truly some of the finest you’ll find in the capital. Now, the team is branching out into pizza.
Mondo Sando says that Oven Pizza will launch at Cafe Mondo in November. ‘Oven pizza’ is Mondo’s term for pan pizza (aka Detroit, Sicilian, or Grandma), chosen for the way it conjures up childhood memories of homemade pies and chunky square slices from the school canteen. The team’s bespoke dough creates a thick and airy base, and each slice will have golden crispy cheese (a frico crust) wrapped around the edges.
The toppings are also rooted in home comforts and nostalgia. You’ve got ‘The Midlander’ with Lincolnshire sausage, pickled onions, Worcestershire sauce, tomato, fior di latte mozzarella and shaved pecorino. Then there’s the ‘Loaded Pepperoni’ which is pretty much what it says on the tin – pepperoni with mozzarella and a pickled pepper relish, inspired by the pepperoncini that come with a Papa John’s. For veggies, Mondo has created a pie topped with mushroom XO ragu with pickled chilli and spring onion.
That won’t be all that’s on offer. Oven Pizza will also have weekly specials channelling classic British comfort foods. So far, it has teased ones inspired by scotch eggs and baked spuds.
Cafe Mondo will serve its Oven Pizza every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening from November 5.
