The queues at Dishoom are now as essential a London experience as a ride on the tube. Diners often wait for up to an hour at the branches in King’s Cross and Covent Garden in order to get a taste of the restaurant’s biryanis, bhel and bhaji. But if queues aren’t your thing, the good news is that Dishoom is opening more and more outlets across the city to choose from.
The newest of those outlets is set to be on the South Bank. Soon, the Mumbai-inspired chain will take over the former home of Las Iguanas, next to the Royal Festival Hall. And a planning application to Lambeth Council shows that it wants to make a few changes.
Dishoom’s application includes a proposal to erect a verandah structure with a retractable roof and openable sides over an existing outdoor seating area, to make it ‘sleeker’ and allow it to be usable all year round. There’ll be planters wrapping around the area to give it a clear boundary and separate it from pedestrians. Dishoom is also seeking permission to install a glazed ramp to link the pavilion to the main restaurant.
If approved, the development is expected to cost up to £2m and be complete by October 10 this year. However, it’s not yet clear when a new Dishoom could actually open for business.
The new outpost comes not long after Dishoom revealed it would be opening another branch at the Grade II-listed Hop Exchange in Borough. It will be its eighth London restaurant and 12th overall.
