The excellent Café TPT on Wardour Street has announced its plans to close.
The much-loved Chinese restaurant – a Chinatown staple – has been open for almost two decades, but will be serving its final meal on October 27. The restaurant announced the news on Instagram, but no reason was given for the closure.
Café TPT wrote: ‘What started as a restaurant became so much more than that - it became a place filled with familiar faces, friendships, celebrations, laughter and countless memories. To every customer who has walked through our doors, supported us, celebrated with us and made Café TPT part of your lives - thank you. We truly wouldn’t have been here without you. After so many years, it’s time to say goodbye.’
Of the Hong Kong-style canteen, which serves Cantonese and Malaysian dishes and promises ‘Chinese street food’ on its awning, we wrote: ‘The menu in the window of Café TPT looks longer than the complete musings of Confucius. It’s not unusual to see a big menu in Chinatown, but such a vast repertoire seems impossible from a kitchen galley the size of an origami junk. Not so, because dishes from Hong Kong, mainland China and the diaspora are all produced competently, and some of them with commendable aplomb.’
Café TPT was known for its roast duck on rice, stuffed tofu in hot stone bowls and over 50 seafood dishes. It will be missed.
Café TPT is at 21 Wardour Street, W1D 6PN
