Sourdough obsessives and pastry fiends, we come bearing good news.
Last month, Time Out reported that cult bakery Bread Ahead could be forced to leave its original home in Borough Market for being ‘too successful’. The famed crème brûlée doughnut maker began life in the Southwark market in 2013 before expanding with sites in King’s Cross, South Kensington and Wembley, as well as overseas.
But in September, Borough Market told the business that its lease wouldn’t be extended and it would have to take its dough elsewhere. A spokesperson for the market said its lease renewal process was designed for the site to remain a place where ‘independent businesses can thrive’.
Now, more than a month after the dispute began, Bread Ahead has just announced a resolution. Yep, it’s time to dry those eyes and wash away the salty mourning tears, because the sourdough makers are staying put.
In a video posted to Instagram yesterday (October 20), Bread Ahead announced that its Borough Market lease had been extended.‘We’ll be looking for a new place eventually but let’s take it a day at a time,’ the bakery and cooking school said. ‘So plenty of road ahead to enjoy our bakes and come on a baking course. Roll on 2027.’

Earlier this month, Bread Ahead opened its first owner-operated bakery in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. A New York site for its hyped sweet treats is also in the works, due to swing its doors wide in November.
