From selfies on the big pink staircase to sipping white port and tonic at Frank’s Cafe, Bold Tendencies – Peckham’s outdoor rooftop art gallery built on top of a former multi-level car park – is one of the city’s go-to sky-high hotspots. Founded all the way back in 2007, it’s about to launch into its 20th summer season. To mark the big anniversary Bold Tendencies is putting on a huge cultural festival.
The programme, called ‘Euphoria’, will run over the summer until September 12, and feature everything from site-specific art installations and live music to performances and readings from the likes of leading composers and choreographers, celebrated choirs, orchestras, writers and thinkers.
Highlights include performances from Multi-Story Orchestra – a Peckham-based youth-led orchestra that performs in unexpected settings – and a performative reading from Nigerian-British novelist and poet Ben Okri.
Across the run, there’ll also be a range of sculptures by London-based and international artists to look at in the rooftop art space. These include Andreas Gursky’s large-scale photographs of techno and trance music crowds, sculptor Emma Hart’s colourful take on a traditional pub bar, Athen Kardashian & Nina Mhach Durban’s work dedicated to London high streets, Tarek Lakhrissi’s giant slug sculpture meditating on time, and Louis Morlæ’s self-driving buggy which emits an ‘animative’ score that changes with the surrounding weather conditions.
According to the organisers, Bold Tendencies’ Euphoria ‘asserts the possibility of something other, not as a retreat from the world but as a mode of being and being-together that is free, uncompromising and insistently alive’. What are you waiting for?
