Day of the Dead Family Festival

In recent years the Horniman has swerved Halloween per se in favour of the adjacent Day of the Dead/Dia de Muertos, the Mexican festival that forgoes silly scares and instead commemorates those who have departed in gloriously vivid, carnivalesque fashion. There are two parts to the Horniman’s big day, which this year falls on October 31 itself. The Family Festival will run 11am-4pm and feature live music and dance, face painting, Mexican food stalls, a Mexican market, and much much more. It’s a ticketed event you’re best booking in advance for. (There’s also an Evening Fiesta that runs 7.30pm-10pm and features street food and special cocktails – it’s adults only and costs £22).
