Set on the edge of Bairro Alto, The Lumiares is a five-star hotel away from the colourful chaos of its neighbourhood. Housed in an 18th-century former palace, the interiors are all monochrome calm, gleaming geometric tiles and brass chandeliers. Its 47 apartment-style suites are chic but exceptionally homely and full of Portuguese design by local artists. But the real showstopper is Lumi Rooftop, one of Lisbon’s most celebrated terraces, offering sweeping views over the city’s rooftops, São Jorge Castle and the Tagus at sunset.

Time Out tip: Need local tips? The hotel’s WhatsApp concierge will sort you right out

Address: 142 Rua do Diário de Notícias 1200-146 Lisboa

Price per night: Low season from 220, high season from 280

ME Lisbon is the sort of place that feels purpose-built for a city break done properly. Sitting just off Marquês do Pombal, it brings a glossy, contemporary edge to Lisbon’s hotel scene without tipping into cold or corporate. Behind the glassy façade you’ll find sun-soaked rooms, warm service and thoughtful design details that make this very big hotel (213 rooms in total) feel surprisingly personal. Spend many lazy hours by the rooftop pool at ATTIKO, check out the spa on the bottom floor and dine at Fismuler, the main restaurant, which feels like a proper neighbourhood restaurant with seating for 120.

Time Out tip: Don’t be tempted to get a taxi into town – a leisurely stroll along Avenida da Liberdade was one of my trip highlights

Address: 2 Avenida António Augusto de Aguiar, Avenidas Novas, 1050-010 Lisbon, Portugal

Price per night: From €263 per night

Closest transport: Av. Fontes P. Melo bus stop is right outside the hotel, and is served by the 207, 722, 727, 736, 738, 744, and 783 buses. Lisbon Airport is a 15-20 minute drive

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is, most definitely, an icon of the hotel scene here. Opened in 1959 as the city’s first true luxury stay, it still delivers a sense of arrival, from the marble-clad lobby and museum-worthy art collection to the discreet, faultless service. Rooms are spacious and serene, while the pool, spa and rooftop gym have a cool, calm and collected air about them that feel completely disconnected from the chaos of the city outside. The knockout, though, is Michelin-starred CURA, whose tasting menus alone justify the stay. Grand, indulgent and impeccably run, this is Lisbon luxury at its most classic.

Time Out tip: Make sure to reserve CURA well in advance – even non-guests book tables weeks ahead

Address: R. Rodrigo da Fonseca 88, Lisboa, - 1099-039

Price: Starting from around €600 per night

Closest transport: Humberto Delgado Airport is a 20-minute taxi ride away (suite guests can get a complimentary private town car or limousine transfer). The closest metro station is Marquês de Pombal, which is a short walk from the hotel.

4. Olissippo Lapa Palace

Hidden among the mansions of four-surname-plus-two-hyphen-named families, this 19th-century manor house is as close as it gets to a modern-day royal palace. Its classical imperial style will have you constantly gaping even if you think you're immune to the charms of a wooden dresser, an elegant curtain or a crystal chandelier. The decoration and the landscape are different in each room (some face the Tagus, others the exotic garden). The palace suites have the largest four-poster beds you will ever see, wherein two people can stretch diagonally and not touch each other. The gym with its heated swimming pool and the spa are great indoor options for a relaxed time, but on sunny days it's a sin not to enjoy the garden and the outer pool.

Time Out tip: Secluded in a subtropical garden while only being a short drive from the centre, so you get the best of both here in terms of location.

Address: Rua do Pau de Bandeira 4, 1249-021 Lisboa

Price: Approximately €300 per night for a standard room

Closest transport: Bus stops R. Prior and R. Garcia Orta are a few minutes’ walk away

5. InterContinental Lisbon

Look out over the Tagus from one of the many windows in this glass tower. The InterContinental provides the lap of luxury, with elegant decor that harks back to the Golden Age of Hollywood glamour. There are vintage Azulejo ceramic tiles along the walls, the steak tartar at their exemplary restaurant Akla is well known and there's a wine cellar too. You can access free wifi everywhere in the building, use the onsite gym and take advantage of the private parking.

Time Out tip: This cosy modern hotel looks overlooks Eduardo Park and just a short walk from Marquês de Pombal Square.

6. Altis Avenida Hotel

The five-star Altis Avenida harks back to the sumptuous design of the 1940s. Rich gold trim and slabs of marble run throughout, with lovely modernist touches. Despite the retro glamour, you can rest assured that they have all the mod cons. Enjoy an elegant lobby bar, rooftop restaurant (Rossio) and 24-hour room service. Plus they’re pet-friendly, so you can bring Fido along (so long as he's under 15kg) and they’ll provide a bed and bowls

Time Out tip: Lap up Altis’ modernised historical charm and spectacular rooftop views while being close to Bairro Alto.

Address: Rua 1º de Dezembro 120, 1200-360 Lisbon

Price: Approximately €150-€350 per night, depending on season and room type

Closest transport: Restauradores metro station (1-minute walk); Rossio train station (1-3 minute walk); multiple bus lines nearby

7. Valverde Hotel

This historic building was protected from alterations when renovations were being made, so much of its nineteenth-century charm remains. Naturally, this means the 25 rooms vary hugely in size, but even the smallest ones (little more than 20sqm) are decked out beautifully and have en suites (with tubs). Each room also has a different aesthetic, from neoclassical to Scandi midcentury modern. Guests can enjoy cocktails or afternoon tea in the restaurant/bar, live fado twice a week and a walled pool garden.

Time Out tip: Want the full Lisbon experience? You can listen to live fado in the hotel bar and its garden on set evenings.

Address: Avenida da Liberdade 164, 1250-146 Lisbon

Price: Approximately €275-€380 per night, depending on season and room type

Closest transport: Avenida metro station (2-minute walk); Rossio train station (around 10-minute walk); several bus routes along Avenida da Liberdade nearby

8. Bairro Alto Hotel

Overlooking the river and Lisbon's Old Town is this magnificent boutique hotel that encapsulates a blend of luxury and tradition within its 18th-century walls. Bairro Alto is host to 87 magnificent guestrooms total, each with warm, contemporary and home-like touches to ensure a comfortable stay. This cosiness is felt throughout the hotel whether down at the patisserie, where you can enjoy sweet and savoury treats accompanied by views of the square, over coffee at the laid-back ground-floor mezzanine bar, or even while dining on the 5th-floor, bohemian-style of course.

Time Out tip: This is a great location for exploring on foot. You’ll find lots of nearby boutiques, galleries, restaurants and pretty side streets.

Address: Praça Luís de Camões 2, 1200-243 Lisbon

Price: Approximately €300-€600 per night, depending on season and room type

Closest transport: Baixa-Chiado metro station
