The best sandwiches in Delhi

What is it? One of the first proper delis in the city, Pete’s has a loyal following among the foodies of Delhi. They’ve even managed to carve out their own spot in the hotly populated Greater Kailash-II M-Block market. 

Why we love it: Because it’s owned and run by the same folks behind popular delicatessen brand Artisan Meats, Pete’s nails their cured meats. The NYC Chopped Cheese is a work of art, served in a proper hoagie roll, soft, yet the kind that doesn’t disintegrate four bites in and leave you with the innards of a sandwich falling across your hands. The Pastrami, between slices of fresh ciabatta, remains a crowd favourite, while the veggie crowds swear by the Aubergine Parm. 

Time Out tip: Make it a meal with the fries and a long slice of their homemade pickle on the side.

What is it? A sandwich deli by day, a Thai cocktail and small plates bar by night

Why we love it: Savage doesn't mess around. They exclusively serve sandwiches and a few sides from morning till dusk from their slick little Hauz Khas outpost, with enough on both the veggie and non-veggie menus to keep everyone satisfied. What I particularly love about their sandos is the range and quality of bread – from Tuscan focaccia to baguettes to milk bread – plus of course, the quality of the meat, which is no real surprise, given that Savage comes to you from the owners of Chard, one of the best burger joints in the city. Don't miss the Italian Job (the pistachio + ham combination goes hard) or the Truffle Trouble. And don't even think about skipping dessert – both the ice-cream sandwich and the chocolate mousse are exceptionally well made.

What is it? The newest kid on the block when it comes to Delhi’s sandwich scene, known for serving massive Florentine sandwiches. The spot, interestingly, doubles as a tiny bar at night, serving only up to six cocktails at a time. 

Why we love it: Dumbo’s setup is (consciously) reminiscent of Florence – a counter lined with gorgeous vibrant veggies, whole black truffles, and a back wall slotted with cans of Italian tomatoes. They’ve ditched the focaccia and ciabatta for the famous Tuscan schiacciata bread, which is crispy, yet soft, and feels much lighter going down. The sandwich to get is, undoubtedly, the Viola, which is slathered with incredible nduja meat, fresh creamy burrata, crisp baby arugula and slices of prosciutto. You can’t go wrong with the Tuscan Truffle either, with a creamy truffle pecorino cream, burnt garlic, mushroom fricassee, rocket leaves, stracciatella, and topped with shavings of black truffle. Be sure to ask for their softy flavour of the day, and get a scoop before you leave.

Time Out tip: Get there early, because they only serve 50 portions of each sandwich per day.

What is it? Exactly what it sounds like – a corner shop for sandwiches!

Why we love it: It’s a bold choice to veer consciously away from the crowded, aggressively competitive Greater Kailash-II M-Block market and place your sandwich shop in a tiny local market in the same neighbourhood. Kona serves up a variety of sandwiches, the names of which are puns on popular songs – Stand Banh-Mi (the absolute best and most authentic banh-mi in Delhi) and Fry Me To The Moon remain their most popular. They inevitably run out before they close for the day – which is no small feat given that they opened in late 2025. They have great drinks, too, including a matcha latte made with cereal-infused milk. 

Time Out tip: End with an ice cream sandwich, served between two giant macarons.

What is it? A fiercely gatekept café in the bylanes of Jangpura, far from prying eyes.

Why we love it: Coming up on its 70th year of operations, Novelty is a far cry from the fancy-schmancy sandwich shops doing the rounds right now. Novelty does simple sandwiches – no extra condiments, no artisanal bread, and often limited to one or two fillings per item. Almost everything’s made in-house, right down to the eggless mayonnaise to the chicken to the pork ham, as well as the incredibly spicy green chutney served liberally from a small bucket on the counter. You get to pick your bread (white, brown, or multigrain), your filling, and whether you want it toasted. I swear by the toasted pork ham in brown bread, or the vegetarian sandwich in plain white bread. 

Time Out tip: Wash your sandwich down with a bottle of their cold coffee, which, you guessed it, is also made in-house.

What is it? A small café by bootstrappers, for bootstrappers, serving excellent coffee, sandwiches and open toasts. 

Why we love it: The owner, Abhishek, is almost always around, and a joy to talk to. There’s a huge common table, and you’d be hard pressed to leave without striking up a conversation with some of the customers there. The pressed portobello panini is everything you want it to be – crisp, packed with a punch of umami flavour, and just enough to satiate the 4pm munchies. The cinnamon toast scratches the sweet tooth itch pretty well. 

Time Out tip: Ask for a tiny bowl of their homemade pesto to dip your sandwich in. It’s a match made in heaven.

What is it? An institution that sets the benchmark for every bakery that’s opened in Delhi post Independence, Wenger’s remains one of the most adored and frequented bakeries in the city.

Why we love it: Wenger’s Deli remains one of the most affordable places in central Delhi at which to make a pitstop for a hearty snack (that may well substitute a meal). The chicken and bacon club sandwich feels like a hug from an old friend, with bits of creamy chicken, slices of bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles, all neatly packed between three slices of bread, and a perfectly fried egg nestled in there, served with a generous portion of golden fries to boot. The vegetarian version of the club sandwich is excellent too. 

Time Out tip: Snag a seat by the large windows, and watch the world go by as you munch on your sandwich.
