Dallas is best known for its cosmopolitan vibes, excellent restaurants, sports and shopping, but its inclusive nature ensures that there’s plenty of fun things to do for everyone—including kids. The city’s incredible arts district is loaded with museums hosting massive collections, many of which are free and have kid-friendly exhibits and activities. And with all the amazing restaurants, parks, pools and shows, there’s always something happening to keep the whole family entertained all year round.

After all, the city encompasses around 400 square miles, and that’s a lot of space to let the good times roll. Whether your little ones are into sparkles on a stage, science and history displays, exhilarating roller coasters, or simply chasing butterflies in a park, these are 12 picks for the best family experiences in Dallas.

Best things to do with kids in Dallas

1. Six Flags Over Texas

What is it? The crème de la crème of Texas theme parks. It’s located in Arlington, halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, and easily accessible to visitors all over the metroplex.

Why go? Adults and kids alike will have a blast at Six Flags Over Texas, a 212-acre wonderland with towering roller coasters, including fan-favorites like Titan, Batman, Aquaman and the New Texas Giant. Smaller kids can still take advantage of rides and attractions that skip the 48-inch height requirement and offer a slightly less heart-pounding experience. Just remember that lines can get long on weekends, and summer is obviously hot, so try going on weekdays or outside of the busiest summer months if possible.

2. Perot Museum of Nature and Science

What is it? A world-class museum in the heart of Dallas with 11 permanent exhibitions that explore the earth, dinosaurs, sports and energy from an approachable, family-friendly perspective.

Why go? Families with children of all ages are bound to adore the Perot, whether or not they’re science buffs. This unique, architecturally stunning museum has five floors, a 297-seat theater and a café, plus an outdoor play space and courtyard. For an extra-special treat, kids can celebrate their birthday parties at the museum.

3. Dallas Zoo

What is it? The largest and oldest zoo in Texas. It’s home to more than 2,000 animals from around the world, and the lush setting offers a mix of open habitats, themed exhibits and interactive experiences for kids.

Why go? Aside from providing a living collection of animals most of us only see on TV, the Dallas Zoo gives families fun opportunities to feed giraffes, watch animal training demonstrations and get hands-on in a controlled petting zoo area for kids. Wide walking paths, shaded areas, snack kiosks and a mini train make it easy to spend all day here.

4. The Dallas World Aquarium

What is it? An aquarium and rainforest exhibit located downtown that’s home to an array of animals, including fish, sharks, stingrays and manatees, as well as exotic birds and rainforest dwellers.

Why go? This immersive venue gives visitors a close-up view of sea creatures and other animals via realistic habitats and interactive displays. In addition to sea life, kids can view reptiles, monkeys, toucans and penguins, all under one roof.

5. Jade Waters Resort Pool at Hilton Anatole

What is it? A massive, resort-style pool complex that’s fun for the whole family. It’s open to hotel guests or anyone who books a day pass on Resort Pass.

Why go? No one’s getting bored here—not with two 180-foot water slides, waterfalls, kids’ splash zones, a 630-foot lazy river and plenty of snacks to keep everyone fueled and happy throughout the day. Also, we may have buried the lede here, but there’s a swim-up bar for adults, so parents can sneak in a couple cocktails while keeping one eye on their kids in the lazy river. Everyone wins.

6. Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament

What is it? A family outing inside a castle, whereby visitors are transported to a world of ancient games, sword-fighting, jousting and horse-related revelry.

Why go? It’s a chance to sit down and have the kids be entertained and fed at the same time. Guests are treated to a feast of roast chicken, garlic bread and sweet buttered corn (you eat with your hands here), and there’s bar service for the grown-ups. The stunts and showmanship are impressive, even for the adults in attendance.

Why go? From kayaking and canoeing to bird watching and hiking, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy at White Rock Lake Park. In addition to water activities, there’s a 9.33-mile hike and bike trail that winds around the lake. Come here to decompress from city life and enjoy some outdoor family fun.

8. Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

What is it? A sprawling, 66-acre public garden with lush floral displays, a dining terrace and an educational children’s garden with rotating, kid-friendly themes to keep everyone occupied.

Why go? This outdoor oasis is just minutes from downtown, but it feels a world away. There’s never a bad time to visit, but don’t miss the seasonal and holiday activities, like the pumpkin-packed Autumn at the Arboretum and the 12 Days of Christmas.
