Since April, Cascais has welcomed a brand-new space dedicated to contemporary art and creative experimentation. Cascais LabStudio – a project spearheaded by the Junta de Freguesia de Cascais e Estoril – has opened its doors on the second floor of the former parish council headquarters, right in the heart of the historic centre near the bay.
Envisioned as a collective studio and artistic lab, Cascais LabStudio was created to support emerging national and international visual artists at the start of their careers. It offers them workspaces and a dynamic environment for creation, research and exchange. The project aims to fill a gap in the region’s cultural landscape by creating opportunities for contemporary art to connect with the local community.
Five studios and three shared areas – designed by architects and designers Elsa and Fernando Hipólito – currently host the first resident artists. In addition to their individual work, these artists also run cultural activities aimed at seniors and schoolchildren from the parish. This direct interaction with the community is a defining feature of the project, reinforcing art’s role as a bridge between people and a tool for citizenship.
The first round of residencies, running until September, attracted applications from artists aged 20 to 35 with backgrounds in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and multimedia art.
