Tucked away in the very heart of Cascais, Praia da Rainha is small but bursting with charm. Nestled between rugged rocks with a privileged view of the sea, it feels like a well-kept secret – even though it’s just steps from the train station and the historic centre. Legend has it that this was, quite literally, the beach chosen by a queen. It’s said that Queen Amélia, wife of King Carlos I, made it her favourite during the royal family’s stays in the town, and the name stuck.
It’s easy to see why: the setting is fit for royalty. With usually calm waters, it’s perfect for a quick dip between strolls, or for stretching out a towel and pretending the outside world doesn’t exist. The sandy stretch isn’t the biggest, so it’s wise to arrive early – but the welcoming atmosphere and prime location make it all worthwhile.
