TEARS Animal Rescue has long been a beacon of hope for abused and neglected animals – rescuing, treating, rehabilitating, and rehoming them, while offering a second chance at life.

As a pro-life, registered non-profit organisation, TEARS relies on the support of compassionate individuals to help fulfil its mission of bringing relief to animals in distress. Today, that mission faces one of its toughest challenges yet.

What was once a vibrant sanctuary for furry companions has been reduced to ashes after a devastating fire struck the facility.

"TEARS is on fire."

This was the chilling message received by the team in the early hours of this morning.

Speaking to Time Out Cape Town, Tinka Shapiro, Head of Fundraising and Marketing, explains that the fire broke out just after 5am in Sunnydale, Fish Hoek on a neighbouring property. Although the exact cause is still under investigation, she says that "it spread across the wooden fence and into the kennels".

Thanks to the quick actions of local staff alerted by security, disaster was narrowly averted.

"Staff who live in the area were alerted by security and were able to respond quickly and move the dogs from the kennels that were burning and place them safely in the clinic," she explains.

Despite these heroic efforts, three Wendy houses have been completely destroyed, leaving a trail of black ash where a safe haven for many dogs once stood.

Thankfully, no animals have been harmed and the displaced dogs are now being housed in exercise runs and the organisation’s training area.

Shapiro adds that the dogs are receiving medical attention and are currently being treated for smoke inhalation.
