Chocolate gets a lot less innocent once you start asking where the cacao comes from. This Lectures on Tap session takes that question seriously, tracing chocolate from its roots in Mayan culture through the modern industry, with a focus on labor, colonialism and the environmental cost hidden behind everyday candy. Chocolatier and educator Ruth Kennison also looks at the bean-to-bar movement and the producers trying to make the industry more equitable. The useful part is that this isn't framed as a lecture you simply sit through: the evening includes chocolate tasting, audience Q&A and time to talk with the speaker afterward. Doors open at 6:30pm, giving you time to grab a drink and find a seat before the lecture gets underway. If you've ever wondered why a good chocolate bar costs so much more than the supermarket version, this is a worthwhile way to spend a Monday night.
