But true beauty doesn’t require massive scale or centuries of history. In fact, Time Out has just named two 21st-century Australian boutique hotels among the world’s most visually captivating.
It goes without saying that any list of the world’s most beautiful hotels is entirely subjective and by no means exhaustive. But Time Out’s guide is compiled from first-hand reviews by our editors and writers, who’ve collectively stayed at hundreds, if not thousands, of hotels worldwide.
The top three spots went to a grand Irish heritage castle, a sprawling design-conscious retreat in Japan and a regal 15th-century Renaissance palazzo in Italy wrapped in 11 acres of private gardens. But Australia’s two entries prove that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
Tucked away on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, the avant-garde Jackalope Hotel was named the world’s fourth-most beautiful hotel. With its stark charcoal decor and warehouse-like facade, this cutting-edge retreat is not quite what you’d expect from a hotel surrounded by the rolling hills of a Victorian vineyard – but that’s why it’s so spectacular.
Part of the Jackalope’s beauty also lies in its intimacy. Each of the 45 rooms combines sharp shapes, blackened walls, and wacky furniture, creating a bizarre but alluring, strangely cavernous atmosphere – a bold contrast to the verdant, swaying vines stretching over the hills ahead. The Jackalope’s amenities are equally impressive, particularly the 30-metre infinity pool and spa overlooking the vines.
South Australia’s Sequoia Lodge was the second Aussie hotel to feature on the beautiful hotels list, landing in 16th place. Sitting atop a misty mountain, this intimate adults-only sanctuary blends effortlessly into the beautiful landscapes of the Adelaide Hills. Each of the 14 luxury suites frames panoramic views of the Piccadilly Valley – whether you’re soaking in the freestanding bathtub, relaxing in the sunken lounge by the stone fireplace or gazing through the moon window at night.
