Travelling around an entire city for just 50 cents might sound too good to be true – but for Queenslanders, riding almost all public transport state-wide for a single silver coin is very real. Now, holidaymakers can stretch their dollars even further, thanks to the newly opened Gold Coast tram extension linking Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.
The 6.7-kilometre G:link extension is a massive win for Aussies chasing an affordable coastal escape or looking to ditch the car. For the first time, the tram connects Burleigh Heads to Broadbeach via hotspots like Miami, Nobby Beach and Mermaid Beach. That means easy access to some of the Gold Coast’s best beaches, restaurants, bars and hotels. Better yet, the entire journey takes just 17 minutes – quicker than driving on a summer’s day – with trams departing every 7.5 minutes from 7am to 7pm, and continuing at a reduced frequency until midnight.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said, “With permanent 50-cent fares, Gold Coasters now have access to an affordable, convenient and connected public transport network that will continue supporting the city’s growth well into the future.”
Day-trippers coming from Brisbane can simply catch the train to Helensvale Station and hop straight onto the G:link. From there, the Gold Coast is your oyster: get off at Broadbeach South for a shopping spree at Pacific Fair, relax on the shimmering shores of Mermaid Beach, catch a wave at Nobby Beach (there's dedicated surfboard storage on board), dine under the fairy lights at Miami Marketta, and watch the sunset from the top of Burleigh Hill.
