The Sturgeon Moon will reach peak roundness just after midday on Friday, August 28. While that’s technically during broad daylight, the moon will rise around sunset, making Friday evening a prime opportunity to catch it glowing above the horizon. Here are the times of peak fullness:

What is the Sturgeon Moon?
August’s full moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon, named after the huge sturgeon fish that were once particularly plentiful in North America’s Great Lakes during this time of year.
As with the names of many full moons, the Sturgeon Moon’s name comes from seasonal traditions in the Northern Hemisphere, so its meaning doesn’t quite line up with our wintery August in the Southern Hemisphere. Still, we think a giant fish-inspired moon is a pretty great excuse to look skyward, and we’ll read into it what we will.
